Winter is that time of year when we seek warmth and sun, stepping away from the cold. For my partner and me, our haven has always been Phi Phi Island in Thailand. Since our first visit in 2008, this paradise has become a cherished annual tradition filled with sunshine, sandy beaches, and unforgettable moments.

From lounging on Long Beach to exploring the quieter nooks of Loh Moe Dee Beach, each area echoes our shared experiences and memories. We make countless day trips to nearby islands, which have significantly enriched our journeys. Let me share why Phi Phi Island continues to be our top winter getaway after all these years.

Long Beach - Our Favorite Place to Stay

Every time we land in Phi Phi, it feels like entering a beautiful postcard. Our go-to place? Long Beach, known for its calm atmosphere and stunning views. The turquoise waters, along with soft, white sand, create a perfect backdrop to unwind far from the island’s busier areas.

Long Beach provides a relaxed vibe that feels almost private. We spend our days sunbathing, swimming, and wandering along the beach, recharging after our travels. With plenty of beachside bungalows and restaurants, we enjoy delightful meals while watching the vibrant sunset paint the sky. Studies show that spending time near water can reduce stress significantly—Long Beach offers just that.

Beyond the stunning views, what keeps us coming back is the community. Local vendors greet us like old friends, and their welcoming smiles make us feel right at home.

Loh Moe Dee Beach - “ Our ” Beach

While Long Beach is our hub, Loh Moe Dee Beach holds a very special place in our hearts. This hidden gem is often less crowded, providing a peaceful escape from the island’s busyness.

We discovered Loh Moe Dee Beach on our first trip, and it felt like our own secret retreat. The soft white sands and shallow, clear waters amplify the sense of tranquility. Over the years, we have created countless memories here, from enjoying lazy afternoons to watching the waves gently lap at the shore.

This beach is not just a location for us; it's a part of our story. Whether we spend the day soaking up the sun or sharing evening conversations as the sun sets, each visit deepens our connection to this magical spot.

Tonsai Village - The Heart of Phi Phi

For our daily adventures, we always find ourselves in Tonsai Village, the vibrant core of Phi Phi Island. It’s a bustling area filled with shops, restaurants, and people from all walks of life—perfect for diving into the local culture.

Here, we savor the incredible Thai cuisine. Each meal brings new flavors, whether it's fresh seafood grilled to perfection or a classic Pad Thai. According to Travel + Leisure, Thai cuisine is among the world's most popular for its rich flavors, and we couldn’t agree more. The inviting aromas and lively atmosphere add to the experience.

After enjoying our meals, we stroll through the market, picking unique souvenirs and handmade crafts from local artisans. The energy in Tonsai is infectious, encouraging us to fully experience the island's charm.

Daily Island Adventures

While Phi Phi has its own stunning allure, we love exploring nearby islands for daily adventures. Each outing takes us to uncharted territory, such as Bamboo Island and Maya Bay, destinations that deepen our love for this region.

Bamboo Island, known for its soft sands and crystal-clear waters, is a dream. We often bring a picnic, surrounded by breathtaking views. According to a 2023 survey, around 80% of visitors to Bamboo Island describe it as a paradise, and we can see why.

Then there’s Maya Bay, famous for its cinematic beauty. While it can get crowded with tourists, the natural landscape continually captivates us.

We also venture to Krabi and Railay Beach, known for their stunning limestone cliffs and clear waters. Whether we're swimming, kayaking, or simply taking in the view, we cherish every moment spent here.

The Allure of Tradition

What makes Phi Phi our number one choice is not just the stunning visuals or mouthwatering food; it’s the traditions developed over the years. Every visit begins with a familiar routine—unpacking our bags, setting down our beach gear, and raising a toast to our new adventure ahead.

In the evenings, we find ourselves revisiting our favorite eateries, relishing familiar dishes while sharing stories of our year apart. Each breathtaking sunset reminds us of our deep-seated bond with both the island and each other.

Returning to the places we love is not only nostalgic; it strengthens our connection to Phi Phi Island. Seeing the smiles of local friends reinforces our sense of community here, making every visit feel like a reunion.

Final Thoughts

As winter approaches each year, the magic of Phi Phi Island never wears off. It’s the stunning beaches, delicious food, and awe-inspiring landscapes that draw us back, but it's the memories and feelings that truly make it special.

From relaxing on Long Beach to reminiscing at Loh Moe Dee Beach, exploring Tonsai Village, and embarking on adventures to nearby islands, Phi Phi Island embodies our idea of paradise.

If you haven’t yet visited Phi Phi Island, I wholeheartedly recommend making it a priority on your travel list. For us, this island is not just a destination; it’s our beloved winter escape.

So, as winter comes around again, we eagerly await booking our flights back to Phi Phi Island for yet another season filled with sunshine, laughter, and cherished memories.
