A solar eclipse is one of nature’s most spectacular events, and witnessing it in a beautiful setting makes the experience unforgettable. Spain offers a unique blend of vibrant cities, stunning coastlines, and charming towns that provide the perfect backdrop for this celestial show. We planned a trip that combined the thrill of the eclipse with some of Spain’s most captivating destinations, including Chamonix, San Sebastian, Barcelona, Madrid, Toulouse, Menton, and a stop at Bergamo. Here’s how we can make the most of our solar eclipse trip to Spain.
Chamonix and Oysters at the Coast
Starting the journey in Chamonix, France, just a short trip from Spain, offers a refreshing contrast to the Spanish cities. Nestled in the French Alps, Chamonix is famous for its breathtaking mountain views and outdoor activities. Before heading south, we enjoyed fresh oysters by the coast, a perfect way to relax and prepare for the adventure ahead.

The crisp mountain air combined with the salty sea breeze creates an invigorating atmosphere. If we have time, we should try local seafood paired with a glass of crisp white wine. It’s a simple pleasure that sets the tone for the trip.
San Sebastian: A Food Lover’s Paradise
Crossing into Spain, San Sebastian is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates good food and culture. This coastal city is known for its pintxos—small, flavorful snacks served in bars throughout the old town. Walking through the narrow streets, we sampled a variety of pintxos, each more delicious than the last.
San Sebastian also offers beautiful beaches and a lively atmosphere. The city’s blend of Basque culture and modern charm makes it a great place to explore before the eclipse day. Don’t miss a visit to Monte Igueldo for panoramic views of the bay.

Barcelona and Madrid: Urban Energy and History
Next on the itinerary were Barcelona and Madrid, two of Spain’s most iconic cities. Barcelona’s architecture, especially the works of Gaudí like the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, provides a stunning visual experience. The city’s vibrant street life and seaside location make it a dynamic place to visit.
Madrid, Spain’s capital, offers a rich history and world-class museums such as the Prado and Reina Sofía. The city’s plazas and parks invite leisurely strolls, perfect for soaking in the local culture. Both cities have excellent public transport, making it easy to move around and explore.
The Eclipse Day
The highlight of the trip was, of course, the solar eclipse itself. Spain’s location made it an ideal spot to witness this event. We chose a location of Castillo Gormaz, with clear skies and minimal light pollution to fully appreciate the eclipse’s phases.
Watching the moon slowly cover the sun, turning day into twilight, was a surreal experience. The temperature dropped, and the sky took on an eerie glow. It’s a moment that connects us to the universe in a profound way. Remember to bring certified eclipse glasses for safe viewing and a camera with a solar filter if we want to capture the event.
Toulouse and Menton: French-Spanish Border Charm
After the eclipse, the journey continued to Toulouse and Menton, towns that showcase the blend of French and Spanish influences. Toulouse, known as the “Pink City” for its terracotta buildings, offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Its historic center is perfect for wandering and discovering local cafés and markets.
Menton, located on the French Riviera near the Italian border, is famous for its lemon festival and beautiful gardens. The Mediterranean climate and colorful streets provide a relaxing end to the trip. Both towns offer a quieter pace compared to the larger cities, ideal for reflecting on the eclipse experience.
Stop at Bergamo: A Taste of Italy
On the way back, we made a stop at Bergamo in Italy. This charming town is divided into the old upper city and the modern lower city. The upper city, with its medieval walls and cobblestone streets, feels like stepping back in time.
Bergamo’s cuisine is another highlight, with dishes like casoncelli pasta and polenta. It’s a great place to savor authentic Italian flavors before concluding the trip.
Final Thoughts on Our Solar Eclipse Trip to Spain
Combining the solar eclipse with visits to diverse cities and towns across Spain, France, and Italy creates a rich travel experience. From the mountains of Chamonix to the beaches of San Sebastian, the urban energy of Barcelona and Madrid, and the charm of Toulouse, Menton, and Bergamo, each stop adds a unique flavor.
Planning ahead is key: check the eclipse timing, weather forecasts, and local events to make the most of our trip. Whether we are nature lovers, foodies, or history enthusiasts, this journey offers something special. Witnessing the solar eclipse in such beautiful surroundings is a memory we will carry for a lifetime.
If we’re ready to experience this magical event, let’s start planning our trip now and prepare to be amazed by the wonders of the sky and the richness of Spain and its neighbors.
