Australia’s vastness is a playground for adventure lovers, and nothing beats exploring it on a camper van trip. We embarked on an unforgettable journey, starting in Melbourne and winding through the heart of the Outback, then along the coast to some of the country’s most stunning spots. We chased the stars in remote places, soaked up iconic landscapes, and discovered hidden gems. Here’s how our epic road trip unfolded, with tips and stories to inspire your own adventure.

Melbourne to Alice Springs and Uluru: Into the Red Centre

We kicked off our trip in Melbourne, loading up our camper van with essentials and excitement. The drive north to Alice Springs took us through changing landscapes—from lush greenery to dry scrubland. The roads were long but rewarding, with plenty of stops to stretch and explore small towns like Mildura and Coober Pedy.

Alice Springs felt like the gateway to the Outback. From there, we headed to Uluru, the iconic red monolith that rises dramatically from the flat desert. Camping near Uluru gave us the chance to experience the rock at different times of day. Sunrise painted it in soft pinks, while sunset turned it fiery orange. We hiked around the base, learning about its cultural significance to the Anangu people.

Tips for this leg:

  • Fill up on fuel and supplies in Alice Springs; services are limited beyond.

  • Respect local Indigenous guidelines around Uluru, especially about climbing restrictions.

  • Bring plenty of water and sun protection for hikes.

Uluru to Sydney and Hyams Beach: From Desert to Coast

Leaving the Outback behind, we drove east toward Sydney. This stretch was a contrast of environments, from arid plains to greener pastures as we neared the coast. We made a detour to Hyams Beach in Jervis Bay, famous for having some of the whitest sand in the world. The beach was a perfect spot to relax after days on the road.

Sydney greeted us with its iconic skyline and vibrant city life. We parked our camper van at a nearby holiday park and spent a few days exploring. Walking the Harbour Bridge, visiting the Opera House, and wandering through the Royal Botanic Gardens gave us a taste of urban Australia.

Highlights on this route:

  • Hyams Beach’s crystal-clear water and soft sand make it ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

  • Sydney’s coastal walks, like Bondi to Coogee, offer stunning ocean views.

  • Camper van parks near Sydney provide good access to public transport.

Sydney to Gold Coast and Brisbane: Coastal Vibes and City Lights

From Sydney, we headed north along the Pacific Highway toward the Gold Coast. The drive was scenic, with beaches, national parks, and charming towns along the way. The Gold Coast is known for its surf culture and lively atmosphere. We enjoyed some beach time, visited the animal park and explored the hinterland rainforests.

Brisbane was our next stop, a laid-back city with a growing food scene and plenty of outdoor spaces. We parked our camper van near the river and spent evenings dining at local markets and strolling South Bank Parklands.

What to explore here:

  • Gold Coast’s beaches like Surfers Paradise and Burleigh Heads.

  • Lamington National Park for rainforest walks and waterfalls.

  • Brisbane’s cultural precinct and river cruises.

Astrophotography in Australia’s Darkest Skies

One of the most magical parts of our trip was capturing the night sky. Australia has some of the darkest and most remote places on earth, perfect for astrophotography. We planned stops in areas with minimal light pollution, such as near Uluru and in national parks along the coast.

We have also witnessed a lunar eclipse, which occurred on the 3rd of March, while we were in Gold coast.

Setting up our camera under the stars, we captured the Milky Way stretching across the sky, nebulas and galaxies , and even the occasional shooting star. The quiet and vastness of these locations made the experience unforgettable.

Astrophotography tips:

  • Use a tracking mount and a cooled astro camera.

  • Take flats and darks and as many lights as possible.

  • Check moon phases and weather forecasts to pick the darkest nights.

  • Arrive early to set up and let your eyes adjust to the dark.
